E On Sunday afternoon we took the train and subway to the Stuttgart exhibition center for the German Grill & BBQ Championship.
If you know the tightly organized BBQ competitions from the USA, you had to say goodbye to the idea here. It was a motley crowd of stalls with grill organizations (including the Grillsportverein), contestants, Weber and Napoleon Grills adverts, and of course the ubiquitous vendors of grill spices.

D Am Sonntag Nachmittag gings dann per S- und U-Bahn zum Stuttgarter Messegelände zur deutschen Grill & BBQ Meisterschaft.
Wenn man die straff organisierten BBQ Wettbewerbe aus den USA kennt, musste man hier von der Vorstellung Abschied nehmen. Das war ein bunter Haufen von Ständen mit Grillorganisationen (u.a. der Grillsportverein), Teilnehmer des Wettbewerbs, Werbung von Weber und Napoleon Grills und natürlich die allgegenwärtigen Anbieter von Grillgewürzen.

E I usually make these mixed spices myself, but we really enjoyed one stand, they had grilled spices from the Ruhr area. My darling immediately felt at home. I liked the old story about the mother wood, where the miners had to shorten their support poles so that they would fit and the cut pieces were first secretly and later tolerated taken home by the miners and the mother then cooked the food. We didn’t just buy a pack of chimichurri out of sympathy. The mixture really tasted good and came with a really sneaky chilli note in the finish. In order to achieve the effect, I would have to experiment for years again, I don’t need that anymore at my age.

D Diese Mischgewürze mach ich normalerweise selbst aber ein Stand hat uns so richtig Spaß gemacht, sie hatten Grillgewürze aus dem Ruhrgebiet. Bei meinem Schatz kamen sofort Heimatgefühle auf. Mir hat die alte Geschichte vom Mutterholz gut gefallen, wo die Bergleute ihre Stützpfähle kürzen mussten, damit die passen und die abgeschnittenen Stücke wurden zunächst heimlich und später geduldet von den Bergleuten mit nach Hause genommen und worauf die Mutter dann das Essen gekocht hat. Wir haben dann nicht nur aus Sympathie eine Packung Chimichurri gekauft. Die Mischung hat wirklich geschmeckt und kam mit einer richtig hinterfotzigen Chilinote im Abgang. Um den Effekt zu erreichen, müsste ich wieder Jahre experimentieren, das brauch ich in meinem Alter nicht mehr.

E What seems to be a phenomenon I am not familiar with are two-wheelers with sidecars on which permanently installed grills are mounted. The first was a moped and the next a presumably ancient Ural, a Soviet replica of the pre-WWII BMW 500. Recall that before Hitler started Operation Barbarossa, the Weimar Republic and its Wehrmacht had some sort of treaty that allowed German soldiers in the Soviet Union to test airplanes and armored vehicles, which the Versailles Treaty actually banned for German soldiers was. Even then, the plans for the BMW motorcycle combinations came to Russia and during the war enough of them were left standing when the German troops had to withdraw.

D Was scheinbar auch ein mir nicht bekanntes Phänomen ist, sind Zweiräder mit Beiwagen, auf denen fest installierte Grills montiert sind. Das erste war ein Mofa und das nächste eine vermutlich uralte Ural, ein sowjetischer Nachbau der BMW 500 von vor dem 2. Weltkrieg. Man erinnere sich, die Weimarer Republik und ihre Wehrmacht hatten, bevor Hitler das Unternehmen Barbarossa gestartet hat, eine Art Vertrag, der es deutschen Soldaten in der Sowjetunion gestattete, Flugzeuge und gepanzerte Fahrzeuge zu erproben, was nach dem Versailler Vertrag eigentlich für deutsche Soldaten verboten war. Schon damals sind die Pläne für die BMW Motorradgespanne nach Russland gekommen und während des Krieges sind ja genug davon stehen gelassen worden, als sich die deutschen Truppen zurück ziehen mussten.

E What also fascinated me at the exhibition were menus that were created entirely on the grill. Of course, grilling methods also play a role that are not so popular in Germany, such as the plancha, a steel plate on the embers.

D Was mich außerdem auf der Ausstellung fasziniert hat, waren Menüs, die komplett auf dem Grill entstanden sind. Da spielen natürlich auch Grillmethoden eine Rolle, die in Deutschland nicht so auf dem Schirm sind, wie z.B. die Plancha, eine Stahlplatte auf der Glut.

E The first thing I have in mind is the purchase of a pizza stone on which you can not only make pizza.

D Was mir zum 1. vorschwebt, ist die Anschaffung eines Pizzasteins, auf dem man nicht nur Pizza machen kann.
