In 1939 the Prime Minister renamed the previous Siam in Thailand as part of a nationalization campaign. The upheaval went as far to the kitchen, when Chinese wheat noodles were replaced by Thai rice noodles, and Chinese fried noodles became a Thai dish, pad or phat Thai. Pad means fried, so fried Thai. Let us hope that this was not taken literally in these politically very troubled times.

This is the non-alcoholic version of the good old fruit punch as was made in almost every household in the 1960s from fresh seasonal or canned fruit. In spring/early summer, fresh strawberries were very popular, canned peaches and pineapple pieces were available all over the year.
